you're going to, i assume, see people still suffering the effects of hurricane sandy which many people say is further evidence of how a warming globe is changing our weather. what specifically do you plan to do in a sec term to tackle the issue of climate change? and do you think the political will exists in washington to pass legislation that could include some kind of attacks on carbon? >> you know, as you know, mark, we can't attribute any particular weather event to climate change. what we do know is the temperature around the globe is increasing. faster than was predicted even 10 years ago. we do know that the arctic icecap is melting, faster than was predicted even five years ago. we do know there have been extraordinarily -- there have been an extraordinarily large number of severe weather events here in north america but also around the globe. and i am a firm believer that climate change is real, that it is impacting by human behavior and by carbon emissions and i think we have an obligation to future yen rations to do something about it. in hi first term, we doubled fuel effic

. if we didn't get the message after sandy that our infrastructure is part of national security when you saw how the power outage -- we lost power on our farm for almost two weeks. those things go right to the heart of what keeps this country strong. we need to be competitive and all those feed into national security. so it makes it even more important that our representatives here in washington actually step up and say we have our important things that we believe in very deeply and we're not going to give up on the very basics but we understand we have a bigger job and that's to ensure that the united states is on a good, strong fiscal path because that affecting everything. >> i'm not feeling super hopeful about that. i'm not a cynical person but you have the tax thing and the entitlement/spending thing. and as much as people seem to be talking about working together, ultimately they seem to, maybe even especially on the entitlements thing, they don't want to put something on the table. they don't really want to give. how do you envision the solving of this issue? >> we've done it in t

should note is that the devastating impact of hurricane sandy is still being felt by families all across new york, new jersey, parts of connecticut, we are very pleased that under the leadership initially of janet napolitano and fema, but now shaun donovan heading up the task force, we're focusing not only on recovery, but now on rebuilding. and making sure those communities come back stronger than ever, people get the help they need. so that will be an important topic because it is really going to be an interagency concern. second thing that we'll be talking about obviously is what is on the minds of a lot of american families across the country, that is making sure we get this fiscal cliff dealt with, and that middle class taxes don't go up. i already spoke extensively about that today. i'll just repeat, there is no reason why taxes on middle class families should go up. it would be bad for the economy, it would be bad for the families. the fact it would be bad for the world economy. and i think it is very important we get that resolved and i am very open to a fair and balanced approac
